Finding My Simple Life

The Reality of My One-Month ‘No Buy Year’ Challenge

I am one month into my No Buy Year. To summarize my experience so far in three words: I LOVE IT.

I genuinely did not think that this would be the reality one month in. I truly love not being consumeristic. It is joyful, and I have so much more time. The winning aspect was focusing on ‘Things that I love’ instead of consuming. That has made the difference because I have replaced ‘the get more’ mentality with experiences instead.

I don’t feel like I am missing out! I was worried that I would have FOMO, but that hasn’t been the case. I actually felt more grateful that I didn’t need to keep up with anyone.

Here are my overall thoughts:

1.     I like not thinking about acquiring stuff.

I have way more brain space. I really, really, really like not thinking about shopping.

2.     I like my bank balance.

This has been quite helpful in the savings department. I’ve been enjoying adding the extra bits of money onto the mortgage.

3.     It has given me time to think more strategically about things that truly matter.

Instead of being reactive and randomly buying stuff, I have had time to think more about long-term dreams.

4.     I care more about taking care of my stuff.

Since I can’t buy more, I have been wanting to take care of stuff better – especially if it is an item that I love. Actually, it has been helpful for me to work out what possessions I really love.

5.     I have been approaching my budget with less emotion.

Instead of making decisions based on emotion, I have been approaching our family budget and finances more objectively, which feels more sensible.

6.     My happiness hasn’t diminished.

I am still happy. Actually, I feel more happy because I have more time to do activities that I love and less stress.

I am looking forward to continuing with the joy of a my No Buy Year.
