The 3 Unexpected Joys of Embracing a No-Buy Year

I’m currently doing a No-Buy Year, and if you’re keen on catching up with my related posts, you can follow this link.

My journey into the No-Buy Year commenced on January 1, 2024, and to my surprise, I find myself genuinely enjoying this experience. However, it will be intriguing to gauge my feelings come September…

So far, there’ve been some unexpected joys associated with abstaining from buying stuff!

1. Freedom of Time

The true benefit of not buying things goes beyond the act itself—it’s about not constantly thinking about making purchases. No more online browsing, scrolling through Facebook Marketplace, or casual trips to department stores. I’m loving it!

What has been even more unexpected is how I’ve chosen to replace my time. Whenever the urge to buy something arises, I consult my list of things that I love and engage in an activity from that list. (I’ve watched a lot of sunsets.)

2. Gratefulness

I’m finding myself more appreciative of the possessions I already own. Considering my lack of new clothes as an opportunity, I’ve become more creative with mixing and matching. (I’m really grateful for the dresses I did buy last year)

3. Mindset Change

There’s a saying, ‘It’s not about what you earn; it’s about what you keep.’ While I don’t entirely agree with this saying, there is some truth in it.

Instead of thinking ‘I have the money to buy something,’ this No-Buy Year is helping me realize ‘just because I can doesn’t mean I should.‘ I’m grateful that all my needs are being met—I have shelter, food, clothes, and, more importantly, friends, family, hope, and purpose.

This No-Buy Year is surprisingly great (so far)! I’m gaining more time, appreciating what I already have, and shifting my mindset for the better. Looking forward to more discoveries and personal growth ahead – it’s turning out to be a pretty fun journey! (less than one month in)
