Finding My Simple Life

No Buy Year – Eight Month Check-In

For those just joining, I’m in the midst of a No Buy Year, where I’ve committed to not buying anything non-essential (with a few exceptions like coffee out and necessities).

August has flown by in a delightful whirlwind of normal life. I kicked off the month with binge watching the Olympics. Also, I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I have spent countless YouTube videos about robotic lawn mowers. (Hehe)

One of the best things about this No Buy Year is the space it gives me to really think through my purchases. Take the robotic lawn mower, for instance. I already adore our robo vacuum and am relatively certain that I will feel the same about a robo lawn mower version. But it’s a hefty investment, so I’m grateful to have the rest of the year to mull over which model to get.

As winter in Australia fades, I’m turning my focus toward decluttering and spring cleaning. Although, let’s be honest, that sounds like a lot of work… Speaking of cleaning, I’ve decided to pause our cleaning service for the first time in nine years. I’m (very) nervous about taking back the reins on household chores, but in the spirit of saving money, I’m willing to give it a go for the next few months and see how it works out.

My wardrobe situation is holding up pretty well. In fact, I’ve realized I need fewer clothes than I currently own. Once this No Buy Year wraps up, my next goal is to create a capsule wardrobe.

Here’s what I did buy in August:

  • Cleaning products (now that I’m back to doing the cleaning myself)
  • Varnish for our outdoor cane chairs (a necessity!)
  • A Father’s Day gift

And here’s what I’m holding off on until January 1, 2025:

  • A robotic lawn mower
  • A clutch handbag
  • stainless steel baking trays
  • All the pretty dresses

In closing, I’m really enjoying this No Buy Year. It’s been a great way to curb overspending. I’m looking forward to decluttering in September, though I’m far less enthused about the spring cleaning….

Four more months to GO until the No Buy Year is over!

Cheers, Justine
