It feels like prices are on the rise, with inflation being the current theme. BIG SIGH! I’m not an expert at saving; in fact, I’m still very much learning about personal finances and diving into educational reading. On my journey towards financial literacy (imagine a kid with training wheels), I have discovered six small ways to potentially save money:
1. Try Containers for Change Collect- this is where you get 10c back on each eligible container. Now, to be honest, at first I was like “that’s a lot of work to collect containers and then drop them off at a return centre for not that much money in return.” However, there is now Containers Collect. They come to your house and collect the containers. There is now a home collection service. Yay! So, so, so much easier! I have made over $20 this year, which isn’t much, but it is also a good thing to recycle. The only thing that I have to worry about is having a spot in the house to collect the containers.
2. Unsubscribe from (unnecessary) subscriptions. This year I am trialling only having one streaming service subscription – Netflix. I pay $10.99 a month, which is $132 total this year. (I must be on an older plan because this pricing doesn’t seem to be on the Netflix website anymore). To be honest, I’m enjoying only having one streaming service. I’m watching less TV and replacing that time with doing things that I love.
3. Borrow books from the library or get the Libby by OverDrive app through your local library. You can support Aussie authors by borrowing their books or eBooks from your local council library. The Australian Government has a scheme called public lending rights where Aussie authors receive compensation from their books being borrowed at libraries. So don’t feel bad about using libraries. They are a good thing!!!
Personally, I love the Libby App. eBooks are so much easier to check out and return with a click of a button. I love physical books, but the hassle-free nature of free eBooks through the Libby app is just fantastic!
4. Rewards programs such as with Coles (Flybuys) or Woolies (Everyday Rewards). If you shop at either of the two big supermarkets already, then the rewards programs can be worthwhile. Personally, I use Everyday Rewards and appreciate the extra $10 off every now and then. Plus it is relatively hassle-free. It’s not the reason why I shop at Woolies, but it’s a nice perk. (On a side note, I wish Aldi did home delivery.)
5. Coffee, snacks, or dessert out instead of a full meal. When going out with friends for a catch-up, just meeting for a coffee, snacks, or dessert can save some dollars, rather than a main meal.
These are just a few small ways to consider saving money. NOTE: How you save money is a very personal choice. Make your own decisions based on what works for you and your personal circumstances!
