What a great title for a book! Immediately upon reading these words, I was intrigued. The $50 Weekly Shop by Jody Allen.
The weekly grocery shop is a sizeable portion of most people’s budgets. The concept of reducing the weekly grocery shop appeals to me, especially at the moment when everything seems to be going up in price.
The first part of this book is about ‘how to’ save more on grocery shopping:
- Setting your goal.
- Planning your meals.
- Shopping for ingredients.
- Avoiding waste.
- Growing your own food.
- Making your own staples.
- Three meal plans.
The second part of this book is about frugal recipes.
My thoughts: I found this book intensely practical. I have read it several times and I’m still referring to it for ideas. I like that it is written by an Australian author, so the tips are relevant. I also appreciate that the author loves the slow cooker (which is my favourite way to cook).
Now, my blog is about simple living to find financial freedom. It’s not about frugal living, which this book decidedly is about. That being said, there are some concepts in this book that overlap with simple living, such as easy meals and flexible meal planning.
The parts in this book that did not sound simple, I just ignored. For example, going to multiple places to buy food on special sounds quite time-consuming…
Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I got some great ideas for simple meals and staples to have in my pantry.
