Finding My Simple Life

NO BUYING FOR A YEAR EXPERIMENT – the overwhelming number of possessions in the home

Let’s try an activity.

Pick a room in your home. Any room.

Imagine that room, in its current state.

Now imagine walking into that room and opening the closet/cupboard.

How does that closet/cupboard make you feel?

Do you feel relaxed?

Probably not…

Do you feel overwhelmed? (that’s how I feel)

Is there clutter?

Is there junk?

Is there mess?

Are there items in the closet/cupboard that you know that don’t need to be there, but you are either too busy or too attached to get rid of that stuff?

I understand.

Not all the cupboards and closets in my home make me feel overwhelmed. But there are a couple of locations in the house which are a bit out of control with an overabundance of possessions.

Life is busy.

The last thing I feel like doing after work is cleaning out an overstuffed closet.

And it can be tricky as well if there are multiple people in the house. Not all that stuff is yours to get rid of.

It can be easy to acquire a new possession but then forget to make room for that new possession by getting rid of another possession. For example, you might buy beautiful new sheets because they were on sale but keep your current sheet set because it is still useable, but now your linen closet is overfull.

I freely admit that I own too many possessions in my house.

*Whispers ‘I look forward to going on holidays, because the unit will be clutter-free – unlike my home.’

I honestly find it hard to declutter my possessions during a normal week. As a mother of young children, I am in a busy season of life, and, if I am honest, I like giving my kids things. I like shopping. I worry if I get rid of something I might need it again in the future…

It feels like my possessions are a giant weight.

I want to be able to walk into any room in my house and open a closet and not feel overwhelmed. I want to open up a closet and think ‘Ahhh, everything is neat and tidy and there is plenty of space.’

The goal for this experiment of not buying stuff for a whole 365 is to stop the ever stream of possessions coming into the house so that I have time to think about decluttering and actually do the decluttering!!!

I have a dream of having a home that makes life easier and is relaxing

The kick off day for my experiment for simply no stuff is from January 1 until December 31.
