I am two weeks into my March decluttering challenge. The first week was the bathroom, and this week is the wardrobe.
Dear goodness, I found decluttering my wardrobe challenging! I am doing a No Buy Year, so getting rid of clothes without the promise of being able to replace anything for another 294 days is extremely hard for me.
This is a phrase that I muttered: “Not the clothes. Anything but the clothes.”
But, since I committed to decluttering, I followed through. Well done self! Here are my steps that I did:
- Set aside time: I did this activity during the daytime on the weekend, since evenings and decluttering don’t seem to agree with me.
- Empty it out: I took everything out of the closet. There was a massive pile on the floor.
- Questions to consider:
- Does it fit? (I told myself wishful thinking doesn’t count. LOL)
- Is it in good condition?
- Does it match my lifestyle?
- Sort: I followed the same process that I worked out when I decluttered the bathroom.
- Definitely keep – this item is either a need or love.
- Definitely throw out: good riddance.
- Unsure – I’m on the fence if this item should stay.
- Organise: I put the ‘definitely keep’ clothes back into my closet and organised them nicely.
- Discard pile: I have a trash bag ready to be donated. I should probably get the clothes out of my house before I change my mind!
This declutter activity was actually a good experience for me, but I probably kept more clothes than I needed. I am a work-in-progress. I did another simultaneous blog post to match this post about my wardrobe plans – at the end of the No Buy Year.
Next week is decluttering kitchen plastics and utensils. Bring it on!
