Finding My Simple Life

Discovering My Ideal Day of Rest – with Simplicity

I was reminiscing about my childhood when there was no Sunday trading. The shops were all closed, and people typically didn’t work on Sundays. I might be viewing it nostalgically, but from memory, people seemed to engage more in social and family activities rather than doing chores or going to the shops. Sunday was a more unhurried time. I want unhurried!

I admit that I’m not very good at (properly) taking a Day of Rest.

During my morning walk today, I started thinking about a group of families I see playing sports together on Sunday afternoons at the local park—they just seem to have fun. That got me thinking; I’ve never really considered what my ultimate or ideal Day of Rest would look like.

What would my ideal Day of Rest look like?

The first things that come to mind are:

  • No work or chores (ideally, limited cooking and cleaning)
  • No consumeristic activities
  • No digital screen time

But then, there needs to be unhurried fun mixed into my ideal Day of Rest, with some yummy food, a good book, coffee, and people to talk to.

Here is My Ideal Day of Rest:

  1. I would wake up slowly, greeting my family with cuddles and smiles.
  2. Breakfast would be relaxing – with simple, healthy food (ideally eggs with veggies).
  3. Coffee on the porch in a comfy chair with my journal and Bible.
  4. Church in the morning and leisurely chatting time afterward.
  5. Lunchtime would be like a ‘siesta.’ There would be a rest and lunch. Maybe a family board game.
  6. Then in the afternoon, it would be socialising time. We’d meet another family or two at a park, the beach, or someone’s backyard. It would be unhurried and fun. Maybe a BBQ, sports, or an afternoon tea picnic. Nature – social – activity.
  7. Watch the sun set.
  8. At night, it would be prayer time and then reading a book.

The overall concept of this blog is to learn simple living to find financial freedom. Interestingly, all the above points can be inexpensive and are relatively simple, as well. Realistically, this list won’t be achievable every week, however, I will try to integrate these elements into my life and see if it really does prove to be an ideal day of rest.
